An EMR computer is a PC that can handle the processing of electronic medical records (EMR). Electronic medical records and the software needed to create and maintain them are a critical piece of health care information technology today. Because of the proliferation of health care regulations and legislation, hospitals and medical offices are required to digitize and automate medical records, and to maintain them in digital form going forward. These records must be accessible at the point of care – at the patient’s bedside, in the emergency room or operating room, and in the laboratories and radiological testing facilities. PCs are used to run the EMR software and enable records to be accessed anywhere within a medical facility – the true mission of EMR computers.
Because of the accessibility and usage requirements, touch screens integrated into the PCs make the process more efficient. Other considerations are the need for antimicrobial coatings of the PC hardware for medical/sterile environments and the ability to clean the outside of the PC, so it needs to be at least somewhat waterproof. Many EMR computers are also medically-certified or are considered “medical grade”, so that they can be used in sterile environments.
Medical Specifications:
The plastic used in creating an EMR computer case can carry worldwide medical certifications that include UL60601-1 & EN60601-1. EMR computers can also be IP65 certified, which means they are dustproof and waterproof. In addition, the iOne-MP172 and CyberMed MP15T are fanless, which means that no dust or debris can circulate through the air in sterile environments.
