A small form factor PC functions very much like a normal desktop computer, except that it is housed in a relatively smaller case. It doesn't have an exact definition, but computer experts agree that a small form factor PC refers to everything designed for any motherboard smaller in size than the regular ATX form factor, excluding blade servers, rack mount cases, as well as industrial computers, which are normally created for use in factories and data centers and not for home and office use. Sizes may vary but it is typical of small form factor PCs to have volumes the size of a shoe box. Shapes also vary, ranging from mini towers to cubes, and even shallow and flat cases that look like components from a home theater system like AV receivers or VCRs.

Features

Since a small form factor PC generally has the same features as a regular desktop computer, it accepts standard x86 microprocessors, DIMM memory modules, 3.5" hard disk drives and 5.25" optical drives. However, since these mini computers are smaller in size, they may have limited expansion options. Some manufacturers only offer one 3.5" drive bay, and about a couple 5.25" external bays. And while most machines will have space for up to four expansion slots, very few have big enough space for larger cards. To address this issue, manufacturers outfit their small form factor PCs with integrated motherboards that contain a lot of on-board peripherals so expansion cards are no longer necessary.
Standard heat sinks also don't always fit into small form factor PCs, so manufacturers have to provide customized cooling systems for these machines. Depending on the shape and size, small form factor PCs require different power supplies or customized external power bricks (although a box-type small form factor pc can use standard ATX power supplies).
