Challenge
During a routine inspection by New Jersey’s Board of Pharmacy, Cooper University was informed that it could not use computers with fans inside its clean room. This is because the fans, which blow hot air away from the PC’s components and cool air over them, could easily spread dust and microbes, disrupting the clean room’s carefully controlled environment. Therefore, if Cooper University wanted to continue having computer support in its clean rooms, it needed to find a fanless medical computer solution.
Solution
Cooper University found the solution with Cybernet’s line of medical panel PCs. While the fanless design made Cybernet’s computers an obvious and immediate fit, other benefits soon became obvious as well. First, the water- and dustproof front bezel ensured the computer was safer and easier to clean and disinfect, an absolute necessity in a sterile clean room environment. Second, the slim profile of a panel PC meant that it was easier to fit inside a containment hood (a contained space that pharmacists use to mix and handle medications). After reviewing competing solutions and a brief trial run, Cooper University eagerly embraced Cybernet’s medical computers.
Results
Cooper University’s pharmacy was able to quickly and easily integrate the new PCs into pre-existing workflows, thanks to their compatibility with mission-critical tools like Epic’s Beacon toolset for managing oncological care. With the computer on hand inside the containment hood, pharmacists can easily review information and scan barcode labels to ensure that patients are receiving the correct medication. The team at Cooper University appreciated the touchscreens on the PCs in particular, as this eliminated the need for mice and keyboards and further simplified their work. Cooper University’s team has also reported virtually no reliability or maintenance issues with their computers, letting them focus on the treatment and recovery of their patients. The results have been so positive that Cooper University now uses the CyberMed G15 panel PC across several different clean rooms.
[The computers] have been very dependable, and they do exactly what we need at all times. The staff are happy working with them, and they’ve never had any issues with them.
