Challenge
Tampa General’s radiology department is a key component of its patient treatment and trauma care efforts. However, the massive size of the hospital (including nine buildings and over a thousand beds) meant that technicians had to constantly travel across it to take images, then return to their department to process and upload them to their picture archiving system. Given how time-consuming and inefficient this was, Tampa General began looking for mobile computer solutions with the following features:
- Lightweight and Mobile: Given the size of Tampa General’s campus and the fact that radiology technicians were constantly walking across it, any tablet had to be lightweight and easy to carry.
- Software Compatibility: Any solution had to be compatible with Tampa General’s pre-existing system of EMRs, image processing, and order tracking.
Solution
After trying several other options, Tampa General selected the CyberMed Rx medical tablet as its solution. The most significant selling point of the CyberMed Rx was its low weight and convenient carrying handle. At less than two pounds, the tablet was easy for technicians to carry throughout their shift while still providing the wireless connectivity options they needed.
The other great advantage of the CyberMed Rx was that it could support the full suite of software that Tampa General relied on, including Epic for its electronic medical records (EMRs) and McKesson for its picture archiving and communication system. This compatibility meant that Tampa General’s technicians didn’t have to learn a new system to process imaging orders.
Results
Since their deployment, Tampa General’s radiology department has had nothing but positive things to say about their CyberMed Rx tablets. Radiology technicians have found the tablets easy to integrate into their daily workflow and appreciate the mobility they bring, along with quality-of-life features like the PCAP touchscreen and carry handle.
Tampa General is already looking to the future and exploring other ways to use their medical tablets, such as implementing patient ID scanning to simplify the verification process.
I love this thing. I think it’s great! I’m just trying to get everyone to use it because it’s so convenient and easy.
