Industrial Vehicle Computer FAQ

Choosing a vehicle computer is not an easy task, there are many factors to be considered. A vehicle computer is built tough to handle extreme conditions such as dust, shock, and vibration. It's also made to handle a wide variety of temperatures. If these issues play a role in your decision then looking at a vehicle computer is a good first step.

Here are some more questions you might need answers to.

What is a vehicle computer?

Vehicle computers are usually rugged mini PCs built to withstand tough environments, heavy vibration, and they’re usually fanless to resist dust and dirt. They are frequently utilized in vehicles and transportation for a variety of tasks to facilitate the overall system, but not involved in operation of the vehicle.

How are vehicle computers used?

In every modern vehicle there's usually a built-in computer called ECU, which stands for Engine Control Unit. The ECU is the “brain” of the vehicle and is involved in the actual vehicle operation; for example, cruise control, anti-lock braking systems, air conditioning, etc.

Unlike an ECU, an industrial vehicle computer is not built-in nor does it operate the vehicle itself. It's widely used to connect peripherals, infotainment systems, navigation, CCTV and mobile surveillance, etc.

How are vehicle computers powered?

Vehicle computers draw their power from the car battery, which is why it's important to have a low power consumption unit and some power surge protection. Since the power delivery is not stable when a vehicle is cold cranked, intelligent ignition control systems are needed to ensure the computers safety and longevity.

Can a vehicle computer be used in other applications?

Although these computers are optimized to run all needed tasks related to vehicles, they're not exclusive to cars. Vehicle computers complement a variety of applications such as railroads, ticketing systems on trains, aviation, marine transportation, autonomous navigation, and more. They are usually highly customizable and suitable for a wide variety of uses outside of transportation also.
