Should You Get a PoE Computer?

If you don't have the option to connect your powered devices to wall plugs, a PoE Mini PC is a great solution. If you do have the option and are debating what you should do, It's almost always a better idea to connect your devices to a PoE Mini PC. Here are some replies to some commonly asked questions from people considering a PoE.

What can PoE computers power?

PoE computers have almost unlimited capabilities with today's technology. When it first started, it was used for limited applications such as VoIP phones. Over the years the wattage capabilities of computers increased while the demand of other devices decreased making PoE a very useful option.

PoE computers can be used to power IP Cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, remote computer terminals, and in some cases even digital signage displays.

What are the advantages of PoE Mini PCs?

Since it combines power and data in one cable, a PoE solution is easy and simple to deploy and reduces cable clutter. No need to pass cables through the walls or hire electricians. No installation costs - simply connect the devices with the ethernet cable and you're done. It also allows you the flexibility of installing devices where there is no electricity without sacrificing any reliability.

Can Power over Ethernet damage equipment?

PoE Technology is safe and will not damage equipment. Even if your equipment is not built to receive Power over Ethernet, PoE won't damage it. When devices are connected, PSE (power sourcing equipment) tries to establish a handshake protocol. If that succeeds, the PSE will start sending power to the PD (Powered Device), but if it fails it will not send power.

What is a simple PoE setup?

A simple PoE setup is when a powered device is connected directly to a power-sourcing equipment with an Ethernet cable. This is the most common use case in situations where the devices are less than 100m (328 ft) away.

Is a PoE limited to 100 meters (328 ft)?

One of the biggest limitations for PoE is that the standard length of the twisted-pair cabling system is 100m: however, this limitation is only set by the physical length of the cable.

A PoE ethernet extender can be used to extend that distance to 1,200m (4,000 ft).

What type of data speeds does PoE offer?

Depending on the types of cables used, it can reach speeds of up to 2.5 - 5 Gbps with the newer cable technology. With standard Cat5e and Cat6 you can get up to 1 Gbps.
