Computer components such as the CPU tend to get very hot when they operate, and will eventually cause a breakdown unless the system has some means of cooling them off. Out-of-the-box commercial computers usually rely on fans to keep their components cool. They usually require venting ports on the surface of the computer, which can allow liquids and other harmful materials to get into the system’s inner workings.
Fanless panel PCs eliminate the issue by utilizing alternative means of cooling the components. That starts by utilizing components, like CPUs and SSD drives, that require less power and no moving parts to function efficiently. Less power and friction means less heat, which allows the component to run for longer periods of time with much less chance of a malfunction.
Furthermore, passive cooling technology such as copper based heat sinks can be used in the place of fans to reduce excess temperatures in the system. Heat sinks typically use aluminum fins that provide a lot of surface space, dispersing the heat more effectively without requiring blown air.
The big advantage of a fanless computer design is the elimination of venting ports in the computer’s surface. That means it’s much more difficult for contaminants such as dust and water to get into the system’s internal components: making it more effective in tough environmental conditions.
In addition, fanless computers have fewer moving parts, which means less friction and reduced wear and tear. The use of Solid State Drives is one way that fanless panel PCs leverage alternative components. Not only does the lack of moving parts reduce heat, but by eliminating moving parts of a standard hard drive, you eliminate a common point of failure, leading to much more reliable performance.
The power-efficient CPUs in fanless designs generate less heat as well,which means less temperature-based strain. That in turn allows the computer to run for extended periods of time without trouble: reducing the frequency of maintenance issues and providing a much better mean time between failures (MTBF).
The efficient operation of a fanless system plays huge dividends in almost any work environment: giving it the ability to run for extended periods of time without requiring maintenance. Such systems really come into their own, however, in industrial work environments. For example, take a rock quarry that crushes rocks and minerals into construction materials. As you can imagine, the dust from this type of operation can wreak havoc on internal components, leading to frequent, costly maintenance. Even in environments that are far cleaner, like metal fabrication, there will still be microscopic fragments of metal that can easily penetrate a device through a fan and do irreparable damage to a computer.
You don’t even need to be in heavy manufacturing to benefit from fanless design. Powder coating and paint facilities have to deal with particulates in the air that can easily be sucked up by a fan. Food processing plants might have biowaste, splashback from liquid processes or even simple disinfectants and cleaners that can leak in through vents and cause damage.
There are several reasons why anyone working in an industrial environment should strongly consider a fanless panel pc when working on their next hardware upgrade.
