The idea of an all in one computer is nothing new. Apple came out with the iMac more than 20 years ago. There are plenty of commercial grade all in one computers on the market today, but understanding what makes an industrial all in one PC industrial grade is important.
It all starts with the internal components. Industrial grade computers use industrial grade components. But what does that mean? For starters, when you look at a motherboard, processors, RAM and even something like a video card, it is important that these components be built to withstand extensive temperature variations, high humidity, shock, and vibration. After all, a manufacturing floor or warehouse can be an unforgiving environment.
You also need to consider moving parts, or the lack thereof in an industrial all in one. Fanless designs and solid state drives are vital in an industrial grade all in one for two reasons. First and foremost, any component with a moving part is a potential point of failure, leading to more frequent maintenance and replacement computers. Moving parts also generate heat. In an environment where the room temperature is often much hotter than typical business environments, adding an additional heat source can be fatal to a computer.
Simply having industrial grade components really means nothing if the computer can’t perform the job it’s tasked with or make the lives of end users easier. One key feature of an industrial all in one is VESA mount compatibility. This allows you to mount a computer nearly anywhere, like a wall, a forklift (or other heavy machinery) or even in an enclosure. And those industrial grade components will prevent the unit from overheating, even if it is mounted in an enclosed space.
Furthermore, touchscreen features allow workers to use the computer without a keyboard, controlling and manipulating data directly on the screen. That allows the system readily facilitate human machine interface (HMI) features: giving workers control over automated devices on a production line or factory setting.
IP65 ratings are also important. Dust, water, and even metal particulates are everywhere in an industrial setting. Trying to seal off a tower, monitor and peripheral components like keyboards from everything that can damage internal components is nearly impossible. On the other hand, an industrial all in one computer is much easier to seal, meaning a much higher mean time between failure (MTBF).
A business that operates a factory, warehouse, or similar industrial space often needs to account for adverse environmental conditions, which an all-in-one panel computer can address. For instance, say a given factory uses a water-based cutting tool, which can result in a lot of splashback, as well as sending tiny metal particles into the air. Should either of them penetrate the interior workings of a computer, it could create a catastrophic shutdown. All-in-one industrial PCs, with an IP65 rating, can mitigate that risk.
Factory and warehouse settings can also benefit from the VESA mounts offered by all-in-one technology. PCs can be mounted at various points along the assembly line to manage production and quality control. Units can be mounted throughout the warehouse so workers can scan and tag inventory without having to do everything from a centralized computer station.
Touchscreen technology can be used in a number of different ways as well. Use an industrial all-in-one as a control panel for heavy machinery, or as an interface for 3D renderings and CAD designs. Touchscreen technology also helps eliminate two major points of failure, the keyboard and mouse. These peripheral devices can require near constant maintenance and replacement, eating up time and money.
